What is Todoist.com ?

Todoist.com is a to-do application. Plain simple. But, if you start using it, you know that it is more than a to-do app. It is a GTD (Get Things Done) tool, and a great productivity website.

I have been searching for “the” todo system for me. My criteria of search was – I need a todo app that combines simplicity, powerful feature and I can use as a GTD tool. Looks like my “quest” for this ended- when I discovered Todoist.com !

Features of Todoist.com

1) Simple Web Interface – This is the first thing I would tell about this website. For me, previously rememberthemilk.com ranked number 1 as the most simple todo app, and now I gave that position to Todoist.com. Plain white background. Easy addition of projects and tasks. Reordering tasks is very simple – just drag and drop.

2) Tab style Grouping of projects/tasks – This is something that immediately caught my attention. You can group a project under another in the same way, we use tab to arrange our sentences. Excellent idea and it really works well.

3) Showing the completed tasks once I check them out – Seeing my tasks in checked out state is a high motivator for me – to finish more tasks. And todoist.com show the checked out tasks immediately below as “completed” task. I should confess – I checked off lots of tasks in the past few days ! :)

4) Custom Start page - I can set my start page and decide what kind of tasks should be shown. I set as “overdue, today and tomorrow”, so I get a sense of my tasks status every time I login to the website.

Todoist.com also comes in a premium version ($3 per month).  Since the features being offered in the premium version was really cool, I upgraded my membership to premium version (one feature I will explain down is itself worth the $3 per month ! )

Premium features

1) GTD context for the tasks – Yes !! This is what I want. Ability to set GTD context to my tasks. Something rememberthemilk.com lacked and I wished they had added it. By saying @work, @shopping, @home – I can set various “contexts” for my tasks. And then, when I am in that context – saying going for shopping, I can @shopping, and it will list me everything in that context. Pretty cool.

2) Emailing of tasks : You can email your tasks via email. The subject will become the task and the body of the mail will become task notes.  All my email that needs my attention – are sent to my “Email parking lot” list, and I go over them when I am going to reply them. Also when I get some idea for something (new article, etc) or something I should do, I immediately sent an email to my task manager.

3) Searching : Premium members have advanced searching using contexts (@work, etc), or any keywords. I found that the search are done pretty fast, and I get results immediately.

4) Exporting my tasks to google calendar - You can see your tasks in google calendar, Outlook, iCal and others.  A nice feature.

Good to have feature:

1) Would be nice to have a place to write down our vision, mission, values, or journals.

2) Also the ability to save a search for future use. For eg, if I had searched for @Work, and if I can save this search, next time I can more easily do the search. This will help users better use the website.

Summary

Todoist.com is a great todo website. Very simple, elegant and feature rich. By integrating the Get things done and to-do task manager system, the designers of this product have come up with a very useful and productivity tool.

I would recommend checking out http://www.Gtdagenda.com for an online GTD manager.

You can use it to manage your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar.
Syncs with Evernote, and also comes with mobile-web version, and Android and iPhone apps.

We started using Dooster.net some months ago to see if these applications really make any difference. And they do. Dooster’s excellent. Dooster was so easy to start using. We’re a not-for-profit organisation and therefore really busy but less frantic now. So I’d recommend a look at Dooster.net
